| 2009-5-22 | The ion gauge issue has been resolved. However, as it takes some time to bring the system to UHV vacuum conditions, this process is still ongoing. |
| 2009-5-20 | The XPS SSX-100 has been marked down by Rebhadevi Jeevagan for the following reason:
Ion Gauge Controller Not Working! |
| 2009-5-19 | We are facing some issues with the Ion Gauge controller not turning on. We are looking into the problem seriously. Though the vacuum in the chamber is fine the software cannot be used to collect data, the machine will be Marked Down temporarly till the problem is fixed.
Sorry for the inconvenience, an email will be sent out when the tool is ready to be used. |
| 2009-4-30 | Work on the system is still being performed. An email will be sent out when the tool is operational; at the earliest it will be tomorrow. |

XPS is Marked Up!. As the analyzer was exposed to atmosphere for a long time, you may notice it taking more time than usual to pump down. You can start your analysis once the pressure is less than 3 * 10-8 Torr. You may also notice that the pressure increases while you run your survey (at 800 or 400 micron spot size), this could happen due to outgasing of the anode or sometime your samples. I will not worry too much if the pressure fluctuation is less. If you notice anything drastically different please let us know or call us (Dr. Carter, Dan or me). We did have a user run some samples and everything seems to be working fine now (the detector etc.).
Please remember that we will start charging you for all the time you are logged into the access controller. Also please write down the pressures on both chambers, before loading your sample, the pump down time and the pressure while collecting survey data in the log book.
Thanks for your cooperation. |
| 2009-4-28 | Sorry to say that the XPS is marked down again. It will take atleast 2 more days, before it is up and running and an email will be sent out then. Please feel free to contact staff with further questions.
Also, the effects of the power surge on the tool have not been checked. |
| 2009-4-23 | The filament in the ion gauge has been burnt out. We have ordered a new filament which should be in tommorow afternoon. But we will need to open the Analysis chamber to change the filament. We will also check the stage gears and other stage parameters, and also the functioning of the gate valve 5. We will try to get all samples that fell into the chamber out, so if you have dropped any, please come by and check tommorow afternoon, around 2.30 pm
The tool is likely to be Marked Down till Friday or even later. We are trying our best to get it running as early as we could.
|
| 2009-4-21 | The Cryo pump needs to be regenerated. So the tool is going to be down for a while. If everything goes on fine, the tool will be up by tommorow evening.
Please feel free to contact the trainers with any further questions. An email will be sent out , once the tool is up and running.

| 2009-11-4 | The electron gun is still out for repair. We hope the XPS will be up in
2 weeks from now. |

| 2009-11-11 | The electron gun is out for repair. |
| 2009-11-10 | The electron gun is out for rebuild. |
| 2009-10-8 | The electron gun needs to be replaced/repaired on the tool, and we
anticipate it is going to be atleast 10 + days before we get it back.
Once we install the gun in the system, it will take another 3-5 days (to
slowly ramp everything up, and check all the alignments) to be
operational. You are looking at a minimum 2 weeks time frame before the
tool can be used for any training or analysis.

| 2009-10-1 | The system is likely to be down through the end of next week at least.
Deposition was discovered on the anode today while it was being replaced.
We will be investigating and correcting the source of this contamination as
soon as possible. The training class scheduled for next week will be
postponed. We will send out further updates when we have more information.
We apologize for any inconvenience. |
| 2008-9-14 | Unfortunately, the hard drive that holds all the data (G: Drive) looks like it failed a few days ago. Why? I have no idea. We are going to have OIT look at it and try to recover the data. In the mean time, you will need to create a new folder and new database file. On the C: drive, there is a folder titled "XPS Users". Create a new folder inside that one with your name on it. Then, in the XPS software, click File and Open New Database. In the dialogue box that comes up, name the new database and make sure to place it inside the new folder you created. The good news is that the XPS instrument still works. The bad news is that for now you don't have access to your old data. I'm sorry. My data is on there too, and hopefully everything is recoverable. |
| 2008-8-21 | The detector is back and fixed. The system needs time to be pumped down and calibrated, then it will be available for use -- probably in the next 10 to 14 days. |
| 2008-7-8 | Quick update: The detector is being removed and shipped to Surface Physics for repair. That's all I know at the moment. |
| 2008-7-3 | The XPS is still having trouble with the analysis hardware. Several electronic components were burned out and needed to be replaced. However, after replacement there was no change in performance. |
| 2008-7-25 | Detector is at Service Physics for possible repair. |
