NRC Supports Wednesday’s Child Program

Segment aired on February 24, 2009

Apr 15, 2009:

The staff of the Nanotechnology Research Center recently presented the Wednesday’s Child Program Director, Andrea Shoemaker with a check for $1,000 to enable enhanced technical capability for the growing program. Wednesday’s Child, a state program that seeks to place children in adoptive or foster homes has grown dramatically in recent years. The hardware provided will allow increased data analysis, graphics and recruiting media capability to the staff. According to Diana Palma, Assistant Director of Business Operations for the NRC, “It is such an honor to nurture our relationship with this valuable program by sharing our expertise, resources and desire to mentor children in the careers available to them in nanotechnology”. NRC staff who presented the check at the new Marcus Nanotechnology Building: (l to r: Paul Turgeon, Tina Moseley, Susan Miller, Whitney Forward, Stephen Tyler, Rita Brown, Diana Palma, Laureen Rose, Andrea Shoemaker).

With a highly successful five-year program of building career interest in nanotechnology through the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network, the staff of the NRC is always open to students visiting and looking for new ways to reach out to share the exciting work underway. Last fall NRC’s Gary Spinner offered to open the cleanroom to a Wednesday’s Child segment, and Amanda Davis, of WAGA, Channel 5, brought the first student, Ladarius, in December, 2008. When the visit’s segment aired on February 24, 2009, it was apparent that all sincerely enjoyed the experience. This relationship will continue with mentoring, teacher workshops, and tours for the adoptive children of this program.
