There are two equipment usage options available at our center:
Cleanroom Equipment User & Lab (Non-Cleanroom) Equipment User
Cleanroom Equipment User
Cleanroom Orientation is the first option. Passing this training will allow you to access our cleanroom facility and you may receive training on any of the equipment outside of the cleanroom.
How to become a Cleanroom Equipment User
- You must first go to our website and sign up for an orientation class. Some of the information you enter on the form is different depending on if you are an internal user or an external user.
- After you have successfully signed up, you will receive an e-mail confirming the information you have entered and reminding you of the date and time of the class. Katie Hutchison will send out a reminder e-mail the day before class. You must be on time for the class.
- Before the orientation, print out a copy of the cleanroom manual. Look through the manual before attending the orientation class.
- At the orientation, you will be introduced to cleanroom policies and procedures. Don't forget to bring you buzz card and your copy of the cleanroom manual with you. We will also collect some additional information from you.
- After you attend the orientation, we will contact your PI to verify whether or not he/she grants approval for you to become a cleanroom user. If your PI denies your approval, you will need to speak to him/her.
- Once we have your PI's permission, you will also be given access to the cleanroom level. You will only be given this access so that you may take a Cleanroom Entrance Exam and Chemical Safety Exam, which is held in the Co-op office on the cleanroom level. Please note that this is still not access to the cleanroom itself.
- Review and study cleanroom policies and procedures. These can all be found in the cleanroom users manual and cleanroom safety slides, which you should have already printed out for the orientation class. Because both the Cleanroom Entrance Exam and Chemical Safety Exam tests your knowledge of this information, you will need to become very familiar with it.
- When you feel that you are prepared for these exams, come to the co-op office, room 56B. This is the door next to the elevator on the cleanroom level. You will need to bring your buzzcard to the exam, as well as your scheduler user name and password.
- You will need to score at least a 70 on the test. If you pass, you will then be given access to the cleanroom.
- After you have passed both exams you will be given access to the cleanroom.

Lab (Non-Cleanroom) Equipment User
The second option is to receive training on a specific tool outside the cleanroom. For example, we have several tools including an SEM, AFM, and FIB; the full list of available equipment can be found here. For any questions regarding the particular pieces of equipment, you may email the trainers using the email addresses provided on the lab equipment page. To request training, use the "Email Trainers" link for the particular piece of equipment. Please specify that you are requesting training as a lab user, and provide times that you are available. For any other questions please email Kevin Martin.
You may also look through our currently scheduled classes to see if any fit your time.
